Open House Ministries’ mission is to provide volunteers the opportunity to share their skills, experiences and talents as we work together to serve homeless families.
OHM was founded through the efforts of volunteers dedicated to serving the homeless in our community. We believe that it is the continued support of their expertise and financial resources that assures we achieve OHM’s Mission. The contributions we receive from our volunteers allow OHM to provide the highest level of programming so our families become self-sufficient contributing members of the community.
Together we have formed a partnership in which we value each other, treat each other with dignity and respect, and find new ways to work together to benefit our resident families.
Primarily we have opportunities available Monday through Friday and some opportunities available on the weekends. Those interested in volunteering at OHM are asked to complete an application and give permission for a background check. Each applicant will have an interview for placement and then will receive an orientation to our ministry and the specific department in which they will serve.
Areas of Ministry at Open House
Administration – This includes serving our reception area, greeting visitors and receiving donations. We have reception positions open during the week and on the weekends. We also have some specialized administrative positions assisting OHM staff.
Campus Maintenance – Our apartments and the facilities are constantly in need of repair and care. We welcome the assistance of those with carpentry skills, furniture repair, carpeting, painters, electricians, plumbers and others with knowledge and experience in the construction trades.
Donation Room – This is the area where we receive donations to the shelter. We need people to sort and transfer items to the Thrift Store as well as prepare some items for transfer to other organizations in the community. This is primarily during the week; however, there are some weekend opportunities as well.
Little World Child Care – We have a State Certified Early Childhood care center for the children of our residents. It requires STARS, fingerprinting and additional background checks to serve in this area.
Second Hand Solutions – This is the opportunity to display, price items and make sales to customers. In addition we have an antique room, a clothing annex, a bridal room, the general thrift store and our coffee bar where you will prepare drinks and, in addition, sell food items to the public. The Thrift Store is also open on Saturdays.
Special Events and Fundraisers – In addition to our annual Dinner Auction and Block Party OHM holds a number of events throughout the year that require the assistance of many volunteers with experience in event planning.
Wheel Deals – Volunteer as a bicycle mechanic. We also offer training, with a commitment, for those interested in working on bikes. Volunteers assist customers as well as sell bikes and accessories. Wheels Deals is also open on Saturdays.
