Open House Ministries has many opportunities for volunteers to share their skills, experiences and talents as we work together to serve homeless families.
We were founded through the efforts and ideas of volunteers dedicated to serving the homeless in our community. The continued generosity of volunteers’ time, talents and resources allows us to achieve results and press ahead with the shelter’s vision and mission. With volunteer contributions, Open House Ministries is able to offer quality teaching and programs to families seeking to become self-sufficient, contributing members of the community.
Opportunities to volunteer run Monday through Friday — with some availability on Saturdays. Those interested are asked to complete an application and give permission for a background check. Each applicant will have an interview for placement and then receive an orientation to our ministry and the specific department in which they serve.

Areas of ministry at Open House
Administration — This includes serving our reception area, greeting visitors and receiving donations. We have reception positions open during the week and on weekends. We also have some specialized administrative positions assisting OHM staff.
Campus maintenance — Our apartments and the facilities are constantly in need of repair and care. We welcome the assistance of those with skills in carpentry, furniture repair, flooring, painting, plumbing and wiring. We can usually put anyone with some knowledge and experience in the construction trades to work.
Wheel Deals — You can volunteer in our bike shop as a clerk or bicycle mechanic. We even offer training to those interested in working on bikes. (Available to those making a time commitment to volunteer with us in the shop.) Volunteers are also needed to assist customers, selling bikes and accessories. Wheel Deals is open Tuesday through Saturday.
Secondhand Solutions — Have retail skills or interest? Display and price items and make sales to customers in our thrift store.
Donation room — This is the area where we receive donations to the shelter. We need people to sort and transfer items to the thrift store as well as prepare some items for transfer to other organizations in the community.
Child care — We have a state-certified, early childhood center for young residents. Fingerprinting and additional background checks are needed to serve in this area. Volunteers are sought for hosting parties and teaching special classes in art, music, dance, etc.
Special events and fundraisers — In addition to our annual lunch and the block party we host for those who are currently homeless, current residents of the shelter and Open House alumni, OHM is involved with and benefitting from a number of events throughout the year. All of them require a lot of hands and support. Assistance from volunteers with experience in event planning is always sought.
Adopt-a-Room program — We need volunteers who are willing to prepare a room and welcome new residents to the start of their new lives. This is a beautiful way to show families the unconditional love and care we strive to give at Open House.
