Troy’s Story

In early 2015, Troy lived in Utah with his wife Sabrina. They were addicted to prescription pain medications. He was on a downward spiral of job loss, homelessness, scraping by, spending their last dollars to stay in a hotel with their three boys. They had put their name on the waiting list in 2014 to be considered for an opening at Open House Ministries. Then six months later the call came.

The family moved into the shelter July 2015 and began rebuilding their lives. Their goal was “to work the programs offered at OHM and keep their eyes on God.” That turned out to be the best plan.

The couple became involved in every opportunity they could. When it came time to getting job coaching, Troy was drawn to the bike shop on campus. Although he had been a supervisor in the past, the bicycle industry was completely new to him. Chaplain Mark had faith in Troy’s ability to take on a lead position and Troy was eager to learn. He began as a mechanic, and was soon promoted to supervisor. Now he works full time as Manager of the Wheel Deals Bicycle shop. Chaplain Mark says, “I saw both a resolute faith and a clear testimony in both Troy and Sabrina. He had mechanical skills, leadership skills and they both had clear evidence of a NEW Life in Jesus.”

Troy and his family moved out of the shelter into their own home over a year ago. Sabrina is working full-time now and you will find Troy managing Wheel Deals Bicycle Shop, mentoring other residents. “The reason I’m still here,” he explains, “is because I believe in what we do for other people. I experienced first-hand how every day the staff deals with situations with integrity. This is a place where you can make a real difference. I believe God has me here for a reason, and I am so thankful for that.”

Resource Center Receives Grant

Open House Ministries receives $750,000 gift from the Tod and Maxine McClaskey Foundation for the Open House Ministries Family Resource Center.

Tod and Maxine McClaskey Foundation Grant

Open House Ministries announced this week a major financial commitment to its capital campaign to fund construction of a family resource center on its campus in downtown Vancouver.

The Tod and Maxine McClaskey Foundation has awarded a $750,000 grant to the $3.3 million dollar project. In recognition of this commitment, Open House Ministries will be naming their new campus addition the Tod and Maxine McClaskey Family Resource Center.

Open House Executive Director Renee Stevens comments, “The Tod and Maxine McClaskey Foundation has been a leader and champion for important projects in our community. Open House is honored and blessed for their generous support.”

The new Tod and Maxine McClaskey Family Resource Center will make a profound impact on the local community. The facility will provide a safe and secure indoor space for families and children to play and recreate, 365 days of the year. The facility is designed to accommodate moving administrative offices currently residing in the shelter. This will free up originally permitted apartments and allow them to be restored to their intended use: housing homeless families. Open House Ministries provides shelter for up to 107 individuals every night, over half of whom are children under the age of 17 years.

Stevens continues, “This facility will also allow us to reach people in our community and help those who are suffering with mental health, drug and alcohol, or barely making their house payments. We offer Financial Peace classes, life skills, GED, education, and we want to offer those to our community at large. So you won’t have to be homeless to use the new facility.”
Youth intervention is a high priority today. Stevens explains, “What we do here at Open House Ministries absolutely changes people’s lives, but our youth programs have been limited by our physical space. The new facility will literally give us the space to grow Open House Ministries youth programs, for our residents and surrounding community.”

So far the capital campaign has generated $2.8 million dollars towards its goal of $3.3 million dollars. Support for the project also includes a recent grants from the Firstenburg Foundation and the generosity of private philanthropists. Stevens concludes, “This new building will allow us to better serve our families, our community, our staff, our volunteers and anyone who stops by and needs a sleeping bag, a drink of water or cup of coffee. We need to be doing God’s work and meet people right where they are today.”

Open House Ministries is a faith-based community organization serving homeless families by providing shelter, intervention services and Christ-based life restoring programs to homeless families.

Tundra Trees

Chaplain’s Corner – June 21, 2017

For many years, our family lived in the mountains of Colorado, adjacent to the highest continuous highway in America – Trail Ridge Road. I continue to be amazed by the alpine tundra – nearly Arctic zones where the subsoils are permanently frozen and any plant growth is minimal. Near this zone are the hearty alpine pines – growing only minimally and yet withstanding vicious winds and voluminous snowfalls.

Though there are many reasons why people do not grow, one reason is not necessarily suffering. Even slow-growth tundra trees grow in spite of harsh external conditions. Often, the most vibrant believers have suffered the greatest. We marveled in Chapel at the vibrancy of a ministry team from Rwanda, led by Pastor Simone and sponsored by Liberty Bible Church. They shared of the Rwandan genocide, when ten thousand people a day were murdered for one hundred days. Yet they exuded pure joy in “the goodness of GOD in the land of the living” (Ps.27:13). They encouraged us to press on.

Perhaps the greater issue in growth is rootedness. Our Rwandan brothers and sisters find their life in drawing from springs of “living water” (John 4:10). David urges us to drink in the Word of GOD, just like trees planted by “streams of water” (Psalm 1:2-3). Recently, a core of Open House leaders completed a twelve-week Bible study called “Rooted.” It reflects our commitment to grow deeper as devoted followers of Jesus – regardless. We desire for GOD to take us deeper into life and relationships – within and beyond this amazing ministry at Open House.

Thank you, our faithful co-laborers! We are blessed to be serving, not in austere and severe tundra, but in a land of opportunity, fed by streams of Living Water. We honor you for being an integral part of this vibrant ministry!
